David Moyes is set to bring ex-West Ham captain Kevin Nolan back to the club.
The Scot also wants former England coach Paul Nevin as he looks to expand his backroom team.
Moyes wants leaders in his dressing room with the club in the Premier League’s bottom three and facing a string of tough fixtures.
Nolan, 37, skippered the West Ham side that clinched promotion in his first season at the club in 2012 by beating Blackpool in the Play Off Final.
The midfielder played in a total of 157 games for the club under Sam Allardyce then left to become player-boss of East London rivals Leyton Orient.
Crucially, he is still only five years older than current captain Mark Noble, the man who succeeded him as captain when he left in 2015.
Nevin, meanwhile, was part of Gareth Southgate’s England set-up at last year’s UEFA Nations League finals.
The 50-year-old has also worked for the Premier League and at Brighton and Norwich.
West Ham are in the relegation zone after surrendering a 2-0 lead in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at home to Nevin’s old club Brighton.
The Hammers looked on course to pick up a much-needed three points at the London Stadium after Issa Diop's header and Robert Snodgrass' deflected effort put the hosts two goals ahead at half-time.
Brighton pulled one back just after the break through Angelo Ogbonna's own goal before Snodgrass restored the two-goal advantage with a stunning long-range volley.
However, Pascal Gross reduced the hosts' lead once again in the 75th minute before veteran Glenn Murray completed the comeback four minutes later amid suspicions of handball, with VAR allowing the goal to stand.
West Ham now face a nightmare run of games which starts a trip to defending champions Manchester City on Sunday.
Moyes' will then have two weeks off as a result of their scheduled winter break before returning to action with a trip to runaway leaders Liverpool on February 24.
