West Ham set Mateus Fernandes asking price as Manchester United eye summer transfer

West Ham have set an aspirational asking price of £80million for highly-rated midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Standard Sport understands that is the region in which the Hammers value him — and internally they believe he can go on to become one of the best players on the planet in the next one to two years.

West Ham are under pressure to recoup more than £100m in player sales in order to balance the books after suffering Premier League relegation to the Championship on the final day of the season.

Fernandes is their most valuable player and, as such, has been tipped by many to leave the club this summer.

While West Ham are known to be very keen to keep him, they accept that falling in line with financial regulation is imperative and are open to interest from top clubs in and around their lofty £80m valuation for the 21-year-old.

His young age will make it difficult for West Ham to keep hold of him.

Manchester United are among the clubs that hold a concrete interest in Fernandes, who joined for £38m last summer from Southampton. Both Champions League finalists, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, have also been credited with interest.

He received double disappointment at the end of the season, suffering relegation with West Ham but also being left out of Portugal squad for the World Cup by manager Roberto Martinez.

This season saw Fernandes register five goals and four assists across 40 appearances, and well as make his Portugal debut.
