West Ham sent transfer message amid Lukasz Fabianski and Angelo Ogbonna’s expiring contracts

Former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie has said the Hammers should not extend the contracts of experienced duo Lukasz Fabianski and Angelo Ogbonna this summer.

Goalkeeper Fabianski, 38, and centre-back Ogbonna, 35, are among the players whose contracts are set to expire this summer alongside midfielder Manuel Lanzini, with Fabianski and Ogbonna both playing big roles this season.

Fabianski has started 36 of the Hammers’ 38 matches this season in the Premier League, only missing the other two due to undergoing cheekbone and eye-socket surgery. Meanwhile, Ogbonna has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season, starting 26 of them and making nine outings in the run to this season’s Europa Conference League final.

As things stand, Fabianski and Ogbonna will both leave the club at the end of this month on free transfers, with both having just weeks left on their current deals. However, Ogbonna has already expressed an interest in staying at the club beyond this season.

However, McAvennie, who scored 49 league goals for West Ham across two spells between 1985 and 1992, says that if it was up to him, he would not opt to extend the contracts of Fabianski and Ogbonna.

“I would think not,” he told West Ham Zone. “Fabianski is a good keeper but can he do it week in and week out? He’s getting on.

“You look at some teams, and the best keepers in the league – Fabianski is not one of them.

“Ogbonna is a good player but I feel that we need to refuel and refresh the players. We can’t bring young players through like this.”
