West Ham optimistic on chances of signing a new striker before transfer window closes

West Ham have completed the signing of defender Goncalo Cardoso from Boavista and are still active in the transfer market as we close in on 24 hours remaining of the window.

The club is keen to bring in Basel frontman Albian Ajeti before the deadline at 5pm on Thursday and football.london has been told the Hammers feel they have a 50/50 chance of landing the Basel striker.

Reports that the Hammers have had a bid of around £4m rejected for the striker are wide of the mark, the club in fact offered more, but it was still knocked back by the Swiss side.

They have a big Champions League third qualifying round tie against LASK tonight (Wednesday) so all eyes will be on their team selection if Ajeti plays, though he is reportedly a doubt for the game through injury.

The 22-year-old has scored 43 goals in 96 games for Basel, with 21 of those goals coming last season. He's already found the net three times in three outings this campaign as well.

Championship sides West Brom and Brentford, the latter who has just sold striker Neal Maupay to Brighton for £20m, are also interested in signing Ajeti this summer but it is believed his preference is a move to the Premier League.

Basel value Ajeti at £8m at seemingly won't budge on that valuation though, as usual, structured payments over the length of the prospective contract may well be enough to get a deal done.

The Hammers will have one non-homegrown player spot in their 25-man squad remaining should they bring in Ajeti but that also means someone will have to make way, be it a first team regular or someone who could have been promoted up from the U23s now finding they won't be.

The club has seen a lot of movement in and out of its striker department this summer. West Ham have sold Marko Arnautovic and Andy Carroll and released Lucas Perez, while counteracted that by bringing in club-record signing Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt for £40m.
