West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang joins Sassuolo in £8 million deal as Hammers look to raise transfer funds

West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang has completed his move to Sassuolo for a reported fee of £8 million.

The 27-year-old travelled to Italy on Wednesday to finalise his switch and has passed a medical as well as signing his contract, although the length of the deal is yet to be announced.

Obiang joined the Hammers from Sampdoria in 2015 and made 116 appearances, scoring three goals.

However, the Equatorial Guinea international was limited to a bit-part role under Manuel Pellegrini last season and with the arrival of Pablo Fornals this summer, Obiang has opted to return to Italy.

“I can’t wait to get started,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“I had other offers, but I wanted a family atmosphere and I have that at Sassuolo.”

Upon announcing his departure on Wednesday evening, West Ham released a statement to "thank Pedro for his contribution to the club and wish him well for the future".

The east London outfit may not need to sign a direct replacement for Obiang, with Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez all available to play in central midfield.

Pellegrini is thought to be open to signing another forward using the funds raised from Obiang's sale, with Sebastien Haller and Javier Hernandez the only recognised senior strikers at the club.
