West Ham make Michail Antonio contract decision as striker proves importance in top-four push

West Ham have extended the contract of Michail Antonio as David Moyes looks to continue his ambitious top-four push in the Premier League this season, football.london understands.

Antonio, 31, has proved his talents again and again with his consistent performances for the Irons that have seen him collect 15 goal contributions in all competitions so far in the current 2021/22 campaign.

The Jamaica international was known to be a versatile player during his early career and West Ham days, but Moyes has found the position that he continues to flourish in week in, week out - as a striker.

Antonio helped himself to a goal in the most recent Premier League win in the London derby away victory against Crystal Palace and his goal contributions have certainly played a key role in where the Hammers currently sit in the table.

Therefore, it's no major surprise to see the club making the important decision to tie down the centre-forward's future in east London till 2025.

football.london understands that the hierarchy decided to trigger the two-year extension option in his current deal, which was set to expire in 2023.

His importance to Moyes' setup cannot be underestimated, and the Scotsman has always been full of praise for what Antonio brings to the table.

"He's been amazing for us since we put him as centre-forward," the 58-year-old said last month.

"He's been unbelievable, and with the run of goals he was on when we came out of lockdown and his pride in trying to be a goal scorer and trying to become a No9.

"When you become a No9 you go through phases when you can't score and the secret is to keep going. When his form's good, I think the team plays much better. His all-round form is really important to how we play, but I've seen signs it's just beginning to click a little with him again, so hopefully we're not too far away."
