West Ham legend and World Cup winner Martin Peters dead aged 76

West Ham and England legend Martin Peters has died at the age of 76, his family announced on Saturday.

Peters played 364 times for the Hammers, scoring one hundred goals, between 1962 and 1970 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur.

He also won 67 caps for England, scoring 20 goals from midfield including one on July 30 1966 as England beat West Germany to win the World Cup at Wembley.

In a statement released to West Ham's official website, the Peters family said: "It is with profound sadness that we announce that Martin passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4.00am this morning.

"A beloved husband, dad and grandad, and a kind, gentle and private man, we are devastated by his loss but so very proud of all that he achieved and comforted by the many happy memories we shared."

Born in Plaistow, east London on November 8, 1943, Peters came through the system in east London after signing as an apprentice in 1959, making his debut in 1962 in a 4-1 win against Cardiff City, scoring his first goal for the club in September that year.

After making his debut and playing a day later against Arsenal, he then played in goal a few days after that after keeper Brian Rhodes picked up an injury and couldn't play.

In 1970, Peters joined London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a swap deal that saw Jimmy Greaves head to the Hammers. Peters finished his career with spells at Norwich City and Sheffield United, totalling more than 700 appearances and 174 goals in English football.
