West Ham first half player ratings: Haller good but defence struggles without Fabianski

Roberto - 5

A late replacement for Lukasz Fabianski who was pulled of the starting eleven Couldn't do much with Kopke's goal or Selke's either. Not tested apart from that.

Ben Johnson - 5

Fired an early shot which was well saved by the Hertha keeper.  Not massively tested defensively but didn't have a lot of impact on proceedings. Best defender on show of the four.

Issa Diop - 4

Made a couple of interesting clearances and passes and was nowhere near his best.  Improved as the half went on but his slow start was a concern.

Fabian Balbuena - 3

Slipped in the box which allowed Kopke all the time in the world to steer home the opener. Made a mistake that nearly led to a goal in a poor 45 minutes. Positioning was poor and was beaten too easily at times.

Aaron Cresswell - 4

Wasn't out quick enough to close down the cross that led to the opener for Hertha. Completely lost his man for that. Improved but still looks really scratchy.

Declan Rice - 5

Couldn't keep up with Selke to prevent the Hertha striker giving the Germans a 2-1 lead. Overrun on occassions.

Jack Wilshere - 6

Excellent ball into Haller which led to the Hammers equaliser. Played the deepest of the attacking midfielders and pulled the strings again but had a quiet 45 minutes by his pre-season standards.

Pablo Fornals - 6

Fine finish into the top corner to score his first goal in claret and blue. Really quick vision to set Lanzini away for the second. Generally good and linked well with fellow newboy Haller.

Manuel Lanzini - 7

Buzzed around and showed some neat touches and passes. Cracking finish for his second goal in two games. Looked really good.

Felipe Anderson - 5

Struggled to get going whatsoever, one moment when he was shrugged off the ball so easily by Duda summed up his half.  One good ball into Haller was about it.

Sebastien Haller - 7

Really smart play in the lead up to Fornals' goal as he played a simple pass rather than take on a more difficult shot himself.  Hit a cross/shot harmlessly wide. Super strength to hold off a defender before setting the Hammers midfielders away for Lanzini's goal. Hertha's centre backs couldn't deal with him.
