West Ham first half player ratings: Cresswell and Ogbonna poor, Rice impressive

Lukasz Fabianski - 6

Made a clearance with his head and claimed two crosses superbly. Couldn't do anything about Muto's goal.

Pablo Zabaleta - 5

Was caught by a horrendous challenge from Ciaran Clark that could have been very serious. Got up and down the pitch well and wasn't tested too much defensively.

Angelo Ogbonna - 4

Poor throughout and summed up when he completely lost Muto for the opening goal. The Japanese international looked offside but Ogbonna didn't track him. Somehow allowed Muto to control a ball in the box from a height and didn't put any pressure on him.

Winston Reid - 5

Looked the more composed of the two centre backs in the first half but was jittery up against the lively Sorensen. Made two quick interceptions in succession to snuff out a Newcastle attack.

Aaron Cresswell - 4

Hopelessly caught out position on eight minutes when Sorensen should have scored. Couldn't deal with Jamie Sterry throughout the half, nothing going forward.

Declan Rice - 6

Calm and composed as usual but got through a lot of work. Tried to take the game by the scruff of the neck as the Hammers struggled.

Josh Cullen - 4

Kept losing his footing and his first touch was very much off. Buzzed about in the middle of the park but wasn't really effective in getting West Ham on the move.

Manuel Lanzini - 4

Sluggish opening stages of the game and didn't really figure in the game.

Felipe Anderson - 4

Barely saw anything of the ball, had one decent crossing chance of note but wasted it.

Andriy Yarmolenko - 4

Tried a few fancy flicks but nothing came off. Drifted infield to try and get involved in the game but was ineffective for a third straight 45 minutes in pre-season

Javier Hernandez - 4

Touched the ball maybe five times the entire half. Isolated and constantly throwing his had to the sky in frustration.
