West Ham face transfer bidding war for Maxi Gomez as Celta Vigo aim to push up fee

West Ham face the prospect of a bidding war for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez.

The Hammers have made Gomez one of their top summer targets but Celta Vigo are relcutant to sell the Uruguay international, who has a £43.5m release clause in his contract.

Valencia are also interested in Gomez and Celta Vigo aim to spark a bidding war.

West Ham had an opening £25m bid for Gomez rejected but they are set to step up their pursuit of the 22-year-old, who is currently part of the Uruguay squad at the Copa America.

Having signed Spain Under-21 midfielder Pablo Fornals for £24m last week, West Ham are ready to continue their summer spending as Manuel Pellegrini looks to strengthen the Hammers squad for next season.

West Ham have renewed their interest in Gomez this summer after they identified him as a possible replacement for Marko Arnautovic in January.

Pellegrini and director of football Mario Husillos have been keeping tabs on Gomez since then and he finished the season with 14 goals in Spain.

West Ham want to sign at least one striker this summer as Pellegrini looks to refresh his forward line. Andy Carroll has been released following the end of his contract, while Lucas Perez has been sold to Alavez and the future of Javier Hernandez remains uncertain.
