West Ham face anxious wait over Michail Antonio hamstring injury

West Ham are waiting anxiously for news of the damage to Michail Antonio’s hamstring after the forward hobbled off during the 2-0 League Cup win over Newport County.

Antonio, who has struggled with hamstring problems throughout his time in east London, lasted just eight minutes at Rodney Parade and will be unavailable until at least mid-September.

Jack Wilshere’s first West Ham goal set Manuel Pellegrini’s side on their way to a comfortable victory in south Wales. Having missed the majority of last season through injury, Wilshere was delighted finally to get off the mark when he pounced on an error by defender Kyle Howkins before finishing well past goalkeeper Nick Townsend.

“It took me a while,” Wilshere said. “I’ve always said I wanted to score more goals so it was good to get forward and score.”

Summer signing Pablo Fornals also bagged his first goal for the club just after the hour mark to ensure a place in the third round.
