West Ham confirm sending error-prone stopper Roberto away on loan

West Ham have confirmed goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez has joined Alaves on loan until the end of the season after a torrid six-month stay in east London.

The error-prone keeper has returned to his homeland for the rest of the campaign, football.london understands as a chance to put himself in the shop window with no future for him in the capital.

Roberto joined the Hammers on a two-year deal last summer and was a recruit of former director of football Mario Husillos but endured a disastrous time when he deputised for Lukasz Fabianski.

The Pole was ruled out for four months with a hip injury and Roberto stepped in, However, he committed a number of gaffes as West Ham went on a run of two wins in 12 games, Roberto played in eight of them, which ultimately would cost Manuel Pellegrini his job as manager.

The Spanish keeper dropped clangers against Everton, Burnley and Newcastle during his spell in between the sticks.

Roberto was eventually dropped for four games for David Martin, who kept two clean sheets. Martin has also been preferred as the substitute keeper since David Moyes returned to the club.

Moyes has brought in former stopper Darren Randolph for a return to West Ham and the Irishman made his second debut for the club as he played in the 1-1 draw against Everton at the weekend.

Fabianski is currently sidelined with a recurrence of his hip injury but is expected to return to action in early February.
