West Ham confirm loan departure as defender joins MLS club

West Ham United have confirmed that defender Winston Reid has joined MLS side Kansas City on loan until the end of the season.

The New Zealand international has been with the Hammers since 2010 and is the Hammers' longest-serving player. But he has found game time hard to come by since returning from injury.

The 31-year-old has not made an appearance for West Ham this season and has gone across the Atlantic in search for some much needed game time.

"Winston Reid has joined Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City on loan," read a statement released by the Hammers.

"Reid, 30, links up with the MLS team ahead of the start of their 2020 season next month. Sporting Kansas City have played in the United States’ top league since 1996, winning two championships in 2000 and 2013. They have also lifted the US Open Cup on four occasions and begin their campaign with a trip to Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday 1 March.

"Reid, West Ham United's second longest-serving player behind skipper Mark Noble, has not played a competitive first team game since March 2018 due to a serious knee injury and will now look to gain valuable game time in Kansas City.

"West Ham wishes Winston the best of luck during his loan spell in the MLS."

The defender has three years remaining on his contract at the London Stadium.
