West Ham boss makes transfer budget claim amid link to Nottingham Forest ace

West Ham United are unlikely to spend big this summer, according to boss David Moyes, amid their interest in Nottingham Forest defender Matty Cash.

And a report suggests it is Sheffield United who are leading the race for the Reds’ Player of the Year.

Cash has no shortage of suitors after an impressive campaign at the City Ground, with a number of clubs chasing his signature.

Southampton, Fulham and Aston Villa have been linked, while AC Milan are believed to still be keeping a close eye on the youngster, following their interest in January.

Forest are understood to value the 23-year-old at £15m - but although a full-back is said to be on his wanted list, Moyes says money is tight for the Hammers.

“We’re just coming out of COVID, so everybody understands in football that the money’s tight at this time of the season,” he told the Daily Star.

“We’re going to try to improve the players we have. I’ve always been more interested in the players we’ve got than the ones who are at other clubs.

“We’ve got some bright young players and some players who are improving, so if we can add to it, great.

“But the owners spent a lot of money over a year ago, and I’m sure we don’t have that amount of money available to spend again.”

He added: “We’re trying to build a slightly better bridge between the Academy and the first team.

“We want to add to it and we know if we can, we’ve got to get more - the best - out of the players we’ve got.

“We want to try and have a much more athletic and faster team, so we’re trying to work towards that if we can.”

And the Star add that while Cash is a target for the Premier League side, he “looks Sheffield United-bound instead”.

It has been claimed the Blades are confident of breaking their current stalemate with Forest, who would look to include Luke Freeman heading in the opposite direction in any deal.
