West Ham and Crystal Palace pre-season tournament in Australia cancelled due to coronavirus

West Ham and Crystal Palace's pre-season tournament in Australia has been cancelled.

The London rivals were set to compete, alongside Robbie Fowler's Brisbane Roar side, in the inaugural EVA Air Queensland Champions Cup in July.

However, with football and wider society restricted by coronavirus, and with an expectation that the Premier League season could run into July should it be completed, the tour has now officially been cancelled.

West Ham remain committed to travelling to Australia in the near future and could reschedule the tournament for next year.

“It is a real shame that we will no longer be able to make it over to Queensland this summer," said manager David Moyes, who has written to all of the West Ham supporters clubs in Australia. "However, it is the right decision to postpone given the circumstances.

"The players and I were really looking forward to seeing our fans and the people of Australia, especially as there was great excitement and support for the tournament.

“This is a situation that has affected the entire world, though, and the only thing that matters at this time is that people stay safe and well. We hope the tournament can be rearranged at a later date once things are back to normal, and we look forward to visiting Australia in the future.”

Fans who had already bought tickets for the tournament are believed to have already been contacted by operator Ticketek.
