West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez is set to join Fenerbahce on loan.

Standard Sport understands that the Turkish side have the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season. Alvarez has travelled for a medical.

Alvarez’s departure will pave the way for West Ham to accelerate their pursuit of midfield reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

West Ham’s midfield came in for criticism after their defeat to Sunderland on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, and Potter is keen to overhaul his options as soon as possible.

The Hammers have been unable to spend as freely as last summer, making departures necessary to facilitate signings. With Alvarez’s wages off the books, they will look to pursue their midfield targets.

West Ham made an improved bid for Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes on Wednesday, having last week seen a £45million enquiry for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos knocked back.

Alvarez joined West Ham in 2023 from Ajax for £35m, making 28 appearances last term as the Hammers finished 14th in the Premier League.

Injuries limited his impact after Potter was appointed in January and the manager’s preference for more pace and energy in midfield and has seen Alvarez deemed surplus to requirements.
