West Ham 0-1 Burnley: Hammers suffer setback in relegation battle

West Ham missed the chance to move clear of the Premier League relegation zone after a 1-0 home defeat by Burnley at the London Stadium.

David Moyes knew that victory would give his side a vital seven-point gap to relegation rivals Aston Villa and Bournemouth ahead of their tough fixtures on Thursday.

Sebastien Haller returned to the squad after spending several weeks out with a hip injury, while Andriy Yarmolenko started ahead of Manuel Lanzini.

Despite missing several key players through injury, Burnley started brightly, with Erik Pieters blazing over and Matej Vydra heading straight at Lukasz Fabianski in the early moments.

West Ham's best chance of the half arrived when Ryan Fredericks found in-form Tomas Soucek with a fine cross but the Czech's volley was placed straight at Nick Pope.

The visitors had exposed some frailities down the West Ham left and finally got their reward for chipping away. Charlie Taylor curled in a fine delivery from the left and Jay Rodriguez showed good movement to head beyond Fabianski with help from the underside of the crossbar.

Straight from the kick-off, West Ham looked eager to get back on level terms and really should have done when Antonio broke through clear on goal - only to strike the outside of the post with just Pope to beat.

The Clarets were displaying their willingness to fight for each other, with James Tarkowski denying Yarmolenko from close ranged before an excellent intervention from Kevin Long denied Jarrod Bowen inside the area.

At the break, Moyes decided against sending on top scorer Haller with doubts over his ability to play so many minutes. But with the hosts struggling to muster any real chances on goal, the £45m striker was summoned to replace Yarmolenko just after the hour mark - and with his first touch nearly equalised.

Antonio completely mishit his effort inside the box and it fell to Haller, who tried to sidefoot it past Pope on his weaker foot but the England international made a fine stop with his feet to keep the scores level.

Burnley thought they had sealed the points when Phil Bardsley's cross was turned in by substitute Chris Wood but the flag went up for offside and VAR confirmed the decision was correct.

Moyes gave a rare outing to striker Albian Ajeti late on but they rarely threatened late on as the Hammers fell to what could be a costly home defeat, with a vital trip to rock-bottom Norwich City up next.
