At least £100,000 is to be spent installing larger and more accessible public toilets which help people with physical and learning disabilities across West Dunbartonshire.
Four changing places toilets (CPT), which aim to address the needs of people who cannot use standard toilet facilities because it is impractical or inadequate, will be installed at Balloch Bus Stance, Concorde, Dalmuir and Clydebank East Community Centres during the 2022/23 financial year.
It was also revealed that the council is looking to install a CPT at Clyde Shopping Centre and is in ongoing discussions with the organisation.
CPTs are developed to provide a better quality of life for people with disabilities by containing equipment such as hoists, curtains, adult-sized changing benches and space for carers.
Each CPT is estimated to cost between £20,000 and £25,000 meaning a budget of £100,000 to install the initial four has been agreed by members of the infrastructure, regeneration and economic development (IRED) committee.
At a previous meeting officers were asked to bring a full report to the next IRED committee detailing options for the CPTs. An update was brought before members on Wednesday.
SNP councillor Karen Conaghan said: “Do you know if there are any other suitable locations we could include in these changing spaces - even within shopping or leisure centres?
“I think it is really important that we can provide places which meet the needs of our citizens and provide them with that level of dignity.”
She was informed by a council officer that the council was looking at other areas to install a changing places toilet and they would continue to do so.
Michelle Lynn, assets coordinator, said: “We are in constant talks with the Clyde Shopping Centre to improve their facility to be a full changing places toilet provision and we will work closely to deliver that.
“We have a number of other areas in sight and we will continue to try and develop any new builds.
“The areas that are before you look to cover a large geographical area in addition to providing as much provision as possible within the financial year.”
