West Dunbartonshire to spend more than £110,000 on winter gritting programme

More than £110,000 is expected to be spent on West Dunbartonshire’s winter gritting programme this year, it has been revealed.

The local authority will spend a total of £110,526 from November to March salting footpaths out of hours as and when weather conditions require it.

Work to ensure pedestrian safety will also be carried out between 8am and 3.30pm between Monday to Friday as normal.

Priority is given to town centre pedestrian areas, walkways next to schools and health centres, public transport hubs, footpaths next to day centres and sheltered housing as well as the main pedestrian routes in major housing developments.

There are 40 priority footway treatment routes which take in the region of 4 hours to complete.

Following the treatment of priority routes and should weather conditions require, secondary footway routes will be treated by the council.

During the most recent infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee, members were given two options.

Option one where treatment of all priority footways is carried out with normal hours as and when weather conditions require was approved by members.

Option two - a targeted footway treatment programme with routes classified as priority 1 or priority 2 was rejected by members.

During the meeting, council leader, Jonathan McColl, said: “I move that we agree to option one as we have done previously.

“I ask that council take the resources and take the money from free reserves for this.”

Labour councillor Gail Casey said she was happy to second and agree the motion put forward by councillor McColl.

It was then agreed unanimously.
