West Dunbartonshire residents spend more time commuting than most in Scotland

People in West Dunbartonshire spend more time travelling to work than most areas in Scotland.

That’s according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics, who asked people how long they spent on their commute.

Those in West Dunbartonshire and East Lothian spent an average of 34 minutes travelling to work every day in 2018.

Residents in the two areas spend more time travelling to work than anywhere else in Scotland.

Assuming the journey home takes a similar amount of time, that equals an average commute of one hour and eight minutes each day.

For East Lothian, that marked an increase of two minutes from 2017, while the figure for West Dunbartonshire remained the same. The figures cover the period between October and December – meaning they are not seasonally adjusted.

In summer for instance, more people may choose to walk to work, reducing congestion and travel times.

The average time spent commuting rose in 13 Scottish authorities last year, while falling in eight others.

After West Dunbartonshire and East Lothian, the area with the largest commute time was Clackmannanshire – where people spent an average of one hour and four minutes travelling to and from work each day.

That was followed by East Renfrewshire (1h 2m), while people in Falkirk, Glasgow, and East Dunbartonshire spent 58 minutes travelling.

People in the Shetland Islands spent the shortest time commuting in Scotland – just 16 minutes each way on average.

Looking across the UK, people in the London borough of Havering spend more time travelling to and from work than anywhere else – one hour and 46 minutes on average.

The average commute time rose in 182 out of 408 council areas across the UK.
