West Dunbartonshire regeneration plan to make Alexandria 'Heart of the Vale'

West Dunbartonshire Councillors are being encouraged to contribute to a regeneration project designed to transform Alexandria and make it 'the Heart of the Vale' once again.

Members of the infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee have approved a master plan for the area which looks to boost enterprise and community activities, celebrate the town's proud heritage and provide new homes for people who want to live in the town centre.

So far there are 12 strategic projects to renovate Main Street, Smollet Fountain, Mitchell Way, Alexandria Library and St Andrew’s Church while improving existing properties, developing new homes and creating a walking network.

No single project will turn the town centre around but together they will support the area regain its title as the Heart of the Vale. The master plan was brought before committee for approval last week.

Council leader Jonathon McColl said: “I think it is a good idea that if any members have ideas they would like to see developed - that’s allowed to happen.

“There has been significant consultation on the future of Alexandria - not just on the town centre but slightly wider for many years.

“It is good to see something concrete coming - if you’ll excuse the pun.

“The devil is in the detail and it is going to be really important that we work with the local community on this.

“As the community spokesperson and council leader we will make sure that we do that and I want to give the same commitment in public today.”

It is hoped the master plan will help attract funding for each project which will be developed in collaboration with community groups that give schools, heritage groups and a range of other organisations the opportunity to have their voice heard.

Labour leader Martin Rooney added: “I agree with the leader of the council. It is important that we take the community with us and listen to them.

“They can have a master plan and it can help inform all your plans and projects but you still might have a bit of flexibility to adjust things to meet changing circumstances and opportunities.

“I want to thank the community for engaging in this process. It shows that they can inform the policy and master plan. If anyone wants to add anything I don’t have any objections.”

West Dunbartonshire Council will now authorise the development of the projects in the master plan and the start of the procurement process relating to them as and when funding opportunities arise.
