West Dunbartonshire parents to give views on additional support needs school

Parents at an Alexandria primary school will be asked to give feedback on proposals to include an additional support needs (ASN) base on campus.

Members of West Dunbartonshire’s education committee have agreed to launch a statutory consultation process on proposals to establish a new ASN school at the former Riverside Early Learning Centre which is within the current St Martin’s Primary School.

Residents will be invited to share their views on the plans, from Monday, October 3 until Friday, November 11, which would see refurbishment works carried out on the existing building and for the two schools to operate simultaneously.

The issue was discussed at the most recent education meeting this week.

Labour councillor Michelle McGinty said: “I welcome the proposal that would secure the future of St Martin’s primary school but also the availability of ASN education and to know that is increasing significantly in West Dunbartonshire.

“At the moment we don’t have enough availability for the pupils that we have. There are a couple of concerns which we need to make sure are addressed when this goes to consultation.

“Parents will obviously be concerned about a secondary school being located in a primary school, in particular a secondary school for pupils with significant needs.

“As a parent who has had a child at St Martins and Riverside, I am aware there are areas in which they can mix and I don’t know how easy that will be to control.

“This is not a criticism but I think it is something we need to put out there to reassure parents this is something that is being considered and every effort will be done to ensure pupil safety.”

It was confirmed that risk assessments would be carried out to ensure that the campus is a safe learning environment for everyone who uses it.

The results of the consultation are expected to be presented to the education committee next March.
