West Dunbartonshire heads back to school: Twins mark first day in P1

Teachers across West Dunbartonshire were seeing double as nine sets of twins started school today (Tuesday).

The youngsters gathered for a special photo shoot with Lennox Herald photographer Colin Garvie at the weekend all kitted out in their brand new uniforms.

Suzanne Smith whose twins Cameron and Isla McKechnie will embark on their first day at Bonhill Primary School told the Lennox Herald: “There was sheer joy. It was nice seeing them all together.

“All of them were smiling away.”

Although restrictions have now eased, transitions into primary school from nursery haven’t been as extensive as usual and some children will be stepping through the doors of their new school for the first time today.

Despite that, Suzanne said the children were still raring to go.

She told us about her twins, saying: “They are very excited. We speak about school and we live near the school. We always drive past it and they know the route they will be walking.

“That has really helped.”

Today is a big milestone for the parents too with Suzanne adding: “They are really looking forward to meeting new people but I will be nervous. They will always be our babies but they have big steps to take forward.”

West Dunbartonshire Council’s education convener, Councillor Karen Conaghan said: “Starting school is a very special and exciting day for all our pupils and parents.

“To start with a brother or sister must make it even more memorable. I want to wish all the children starting school the best of luck and, to all our returning pupils, welcome back, enjoy school and keep working hard.”
