West Dunbartonshire councillors set to lobby for tougher firework controls

Council chiefs could be set to lobby the Westminster government for tougher restrictions on the sale of fireworks.

The move forms part of a motion to go before a full meeting of the West Dunbartonshire authority tonight (Wednesday).

Campaigning councillor Jim Bollan has tabled the bid, which calls for the council to write to the UK Government demanding tough new laws limiting the noise level of fireworks on sale to the general public.

The Leven ward politician wants to see a restriction on over-the-counter sales.

He will also call for the creation of a public awareness campaign designed to educate on the impact of fireworks noise on both animals and vulnerable people.

The councillor also wants to see local suppliers encouraged to stock quieter devices.

Westminster hold ultimate responsibility for fireworks legislation.
