West Dunbartonshire Council on track to provide increased nursery hours

Plans to roll out 1140 hours of free childcare by August next year are on track, say West Dunbartonshire Council chiefs.

Some nurseries are now steadily rolling out the Scottish Government scheme, which will see some two-year-olds and every three to four-year-old offered 1140 hours of childcare.

Kathy Morrison, West Dunbartonshire Council’s education officer, has been leading the local implementation and updated councillors at an education meeting last week.

She said: “The plan is on track to deliver the 1140 hours by August 2020.

She said a small number of childminders have shown interest in providing the scheme and said there had been a “flurry of interest” in the last week, which was encouraging.

Councillor Karen Conaghan said: “It’s amazing the amount of work which has gone into this.

“We seem to be very much on track with this. Our thanks to you and everyone who has worked alongside you to get it where it is now.”

Meanwhile, significant changes have taken place in schools and nurseries in Helensburgh over the summer holidays, as Argyll and Bute Council prepares to roll out the scheme.

To accommodate the increased hours, a new early years room has been created at Cardross Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) unit near Helensburgh.

Significant building work also took place to alter the existing ELC unit at St Joseph's Primary School.
