West Dunbartonshire Council investigate allegations made by whistleblowers

The council investigated allegations about staff using drugs while working and claims of an employee posting about holidays on social media while being off sick.

Between July last year and June this year, eight disclosures in the public interest, where a concern is raised confidentially about a danger or illegality, were received by West Dunbartonshire Council.

Allegations included a misuse of council vehicles and that staff were using drugs while working, which were all unfounded.

Some investigations have been completed and a draft report is being prepared for management, including following an allegation that materials were being misappropriated by a member of staff and sold on.

Another allegation that a member of staff was taking regular smoking breaks whilst on duty was actioned by management.

The council is also investigating an allegation that an employee is off sick but is posting on social media about holidays and socialising.

This has been referred to the service.

The information is contained in a report which went to West Dunbartonshire Council’s audit committee last week.

It also reports on two outstanding cases from May and June last year which have now been completed.

Missing money from an educational establishment was also investigated by management after being reported in June last year with the report stating there was clear evidence to support that policies and processes were not followed with regard to the handling of money and keys.

It states that corrective action has now been taken to improve controls.

Allegations of misuse of a council vehicle and inappropriate behaviour towards a member of the public reported in May last year has been referred to service and actioned accordingly.
