West Dunbartonshire Council Election 2022 - who can I vote for?

Thirty-nine candidates are campaigning for one of the 22 seats on West Dunbartonshire Council in next month's local government elections.

At the last election no party was able to claim a majority of 12 seats, with the SNP the biggest party, taking ten seats. Labour, who had held a majority before the vote, lost four councillors and took eight seats, while the Conservatives gained two seats and Jim Bollan taking a seat for the West Dunbartonshire Community Party.

This year ballot papers will see representatives of the Scottish National Party, Labour Party, Scottish Green Party and the West Dunbartonshire Community Party as well the Scottish Family Party and the Scottish Libertarian Party stand in at least one of the six wards across the constituency.

Council Leader SNP councillor Jonathon McColl and Opposition Labour Leader councillor Martin Rooney are also standing for re-election.

The vote will take place on Thursday, May 5 at local polling stations across the country but only those who are registered to vote can take part in these elections.

Those who haven’t registered and still want to have a say in who represents the local community, can still register until Monday, April 18 and only takes five minutes.

Since 2007, councillors in Scotland have been elected using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. This allows voters to express a preference for more than one candidate by ranking them in order.

Information about how to mark the vote is also provided on the polling card, within a voting pack and at the polling stations.
