West Dunbartonshire Council defend school "building site" claims

A Renton dad threatened to take his kids out of school after describing it a “building site” days before its reopening.

Drew MacEoghainn told how St Martin’s Primary was covered in dust due to extensive works taking place over the summer break.

He also hit out over plans to close one of two stairwells to facilitate the refurbishment works, which are still continuing.

He complained over extensive scaffolding still covering the building on Friday, as can be seen from this photograph, and said he would take his two kids out the school if it wasn’t up to scratch on Monday.

He said: “This is nothing short of a disgrace.”

However, works quickly progressed and Drew said he was satisfied on Monday.

The dad, who has two children at the school. said: “Most of the scaffolding is gone and I am told it is spotless inside.I am sure questions frrom the Lennox Herald sped things up considerably.”

West Dunbartonshire Council is carrying out an £850,000 refurbishment at the school, which will be completed by the end of the year.

Speaking on Friday, a spokeswoman said: “The safety of our pupils is paramount and a full health, safety and fire assessment has been completed by a qualified member of the health and safety team in advance of the school opening as planned on Monday.

"The headteacher and staff are full satisfied with arrangements in place. Should any parent have any questions, we would ask them to contact the headteacher directly to allow these to be addressed.”
