West Dunbartonshire back £500,000 transformation of Dalmuir Library

More than £500,000 will be spent transforming Dalmuir Library into a space for the local community.

Members of West Dunbartonshire Council's cultural committee approved the funding of £541,000 at their meeting on Monday which will help develop a main library area, a children’s library, study spaces, art studio, offices, storage and two public galleries.

The plans, which also include moving the main entrance and installing more windows, were brought before the committee on Monday.

Malcolm Bennie, chief officer citizen, culture and facilities, said: “This is a project that many of us are very excited about. The gallery space at Dalmuir has now transformed into this opportunity to completely upgrade the Dalmuir Library for the benefit of the local community.

“By investing £541,000 from the cultural capital fund we would be able to align with the existing building upgrade investment and ongoing library capital investment to create a completely re-imagined facility.

“That will include re-cladding, landscaping around the building and an increased number of windows and interaction between the outside space and the gallery.

“Internally there would be a much larger gallery space, a community gallery and a workshop. There will also be a new children’s area and meeting space.”

Councillors agreed that this was an exciting proposal for Dalmuir that would benefit residents and visitors alike.

It is hoped that once the work is completed the library will look more welcoming and accessible for everyone.

Chairman Baillie Dennis Agnew said: “I think the refurbishment is going to be exceptional. What interests me is the fabric first approach and we need to look at the exterior of all our buildings.

“This is going to be fantastic for the Dalmuir area and the community. I am very impressed by the work being proposed. This is a great investment for the library.

“This is about the council investing their money wisely by making all our buildings appropriate, accessible and fit for purpose.”
