West Dublin has twice as many CAB investigation targets as any other Garda division in State

The Criminal Assets Bureau is investigating twice as many targets in west Dublin as they are in any other Garda division in the State.

Up to the end of last month, there were 1,321 targets under investigation by CAB across the country - with a staggering 235 of those in West Dublin, the Sunday Independent reports.

That means that one in six CAB targets are in the West Dublin alone.

An Garda Siochana splits the Dublin Metropolitian Region into six divisions:

  1. DMR North
  2. DMR West
  3. DMR South
  4. DMR East
  5. DMR South Central
  6. DMR North Central

DMR South has 116 targets under investigation, while 113 are being probed by the bureau in Dublin North.

DMR North Central has 65 under investigation, DMR South Central has 43 CAB targets, while in DMR East, just 20 people are being looked into.

Outside the capital, Limerick had the highest rate of probes, with 98 CAB investigations followed by Meath, Kildare and Wexford.

The figures come just days after CAB told the High Court that building firms were forking out between €1,200 and €1,500 a week to stop intimidation of workers at sites in West Dublin.

The Government has announced an independent inquiry into the revelations surrounding a building site in Cherry Orchard, while the CAB probe into protection rackets is continuing.
