West Drayton fire: Terrifying video captures moment warehouse erupts into flames

This is the terrifying moment a warehouse erupted into a ball of flames in west London .

Bystanders watched on in horror as a container unit was engulfed by fire, producing a plume of thick black smoke.

The smokestack could later be seen rising across west London including nearby Heathrow Airport.

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters were called to the scene at around 2pm today.

One eyewitness said: "I was in the area to buy a car. I came outside, looked around and thought 'where is the sky?

"It was just this huge inferno."

Locals reported hearing multiple explosions after the fire broke out at a container storage yard in west London.

Dramatic video and photos posted online show a wall of black smoke drifting across a rail line near West Drayton station.

Other photos show smoke filling the sky just north of Heathrow Airport.

A spokesperson for the airport said flights were operating as normal despite the thick smoke seen across the area.

Trains through the station were delayed just as the London Marathon came to a close.

One eyewitness told the Mirror: “There were what looked like armed police in the street closing off the roads and getting everybody back - they all had all the proper gear on.

“There's smoke everywhere, it was properly scary.”

One local said on Twitter that her flat shook a number of times following the explosions.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said:Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a fire at an old coal depot in Tavistock Road in West Drayton.

"A container, an industrial conveyor belt, 15 vans and three articulated lorries are currently alight.

"Station Manager Jon Holt, who is at the scene, said: "The fire is very visible and is producing a lot of smoke. Residents and businesses in the area should keep their windows and doors shut and drivers should avoid the area if possible."

"The Brigade’s 999 control officers have taken more than 55 calls to the fire. Around 15 people left the yard before the arrival of the Brigade. There are no reports of any injuries.

"The Brigade was called at 1416. Fire crews from Hillingdon, Heathrow, Feltham and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

A Met Police spokesman said officers are assisting with road closures.
