West Country earthquake 'shook' houses as locals heard thunderous rumble

A small earthquake hit Cornwall earlier this morning (February 24). Locals reported feeling their house 'shake' at around 6.30am.

It has been confirmed by VolcanoDiscovery that the tremor happened around 9.3km south of Redruth at 6.31am. It's magnitude was reported as "unknown" and the depth of the earthquake was 10km.

Taking to social media, people described hearing a "rumble" that sounded like a "large vehicle", reports Cornwall Live.

One resident said: "I heard a rumble thought it was thunder." A second person added: "I am more than 10 miles from Helston and definitely heard a rumble and felt a shake."

A third wrote: "I’m at top of Godolphin Road - heard a massive rumble at 6.30am - sounded a bit like thunder but clearly wasn’t." A fourth put: "It sounded like a great big truck was coming towards the house (even though we don't live by a road) and it got louder then the house shook and it went away."

A fifth agreed: "I thought it was a large vehicle going past my house." A sixth said: "I heard something but live along Clodgey lane and just assumed it was a large vehicle."

There have also been tense scenes at a Cornish school this morning after a protest broke out over new toilet rules. Pupils were reportedly tipping over tables, and ripping down fences, while one student was reportedly injured.
