West Coast close to deciding Rioli fate

West Coast forward Willie Rioli is expected to have his AFL future in the near future. (AAP)

West Coast coach Adam Simpson says the club will likely make a decision on Willie Rioli's future by next week.

Rioli's AFL career hangs in the balance after he pleaded guilty to possessing 24.23g of cannabis during a screening at Darwin airport on April 23.

The premiership forward failed to inform the club about the incident, with the Eagles only finding out when a journalist contacted them last week.

Simpson says a decision on Rioli's future needs to be made soon so that it doesn't become a distraction.

"We're working through it as a club, getting a bit more facts and speaking to all the stake holders," Simpson said on Thursday afternoon.

"We'll make a call on Willie's future in the next week or so.

"I think it (the decision) will be done together. I think they might have had a meeting this morning with the CEO and a few of the stake holders.

"I'll be having further conversations in the next couple of days to talk to the players, to see how they feel.

"We've got a game to prepare for as well. So it can't be that big a distraction that it takes our focus off where we're at in our season, but we do need to get some clarity on how everyone is feeling."

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the decision on Rioli's future will be West Coast's.

"We'll be in discussions with West Coast but we're leaving that with West Coast," McLachlan said.

"This is someone who's been out of the industry - I think he's got to earn the trust back of his playing group, the club and probably the whole industry.

"But we are also an industry that believes in rehabilitation and second chances. That will be, certainly in the first instance, a decision for the West Coast."
