Nov. 29--Bond was set at $2 million Sunday for a man charged with armed robbery and murder in his cousin's killing near West Chicago, authorities said.
James Hernandez, 19, appeared before Judge Joseph Bugos, who set the bond at the DuPage County courthouse, according to a spokesman for the state's attorney's office. Hernandez was charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder in the death of his cousin, Enrique Hernandez Jr., 27.
Hernandez Jr. was found on the side of the road Nov. 20 after someone called 911 to report seeing an injured person, officials said. He was killed at High Lake Avenue and DuPage Street in an unincorporated area near West Chicago, officials said at the time.
Hernandez Jr. was taken to Central DuPage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
As the cousins were traveling together in a vehicle, James Hernandez allegedly shot his cousin in the head, and then stole his cellphone, wallet and money clip before pushing his body out of the vehicle and driving away, according to the state's attorney's office.
Earlier, detectives determined during the investigation that James Hernandez was the last person to be with Hernandez Jr., officials said.
James Hernandez, of the 300 block of Clayton Street in West Chicago, is expected in DuPage County court again on Dec. 28 for arraignment.
