West Brom defender Conor Townsend fires Championship title warning at Leeds United

West Bromwich Albion left-back Conor Townsend has set himself and his teammates the challenge of beating Leeds United to the Championship title in the final five games of the season that remain.

Both Leeds and the Baggies occupy the Championship's automatic promotion spots with 15 points left to play for, and deciding who will reach the Premier League as champions is still yet to be decided.

Following the weekend's fixtures, which saw Leeds record a 3-1 away triumph over Blackburn Rovers and the Baggies get the better of relegation-threatened Hull City at the Hawthorns, winning 4-2, Leeds remained top of the pile on 78 points, with Slaven Bilic's side locked on 77.

Though Leeds and West Brom have been leading the chasing pack for much of the season, Brentford are doing their very best to keep in touch, having extended their winning run to five games on Saturday with a 3-0 home win over Wigan Athletic, meaning the automatic promotion spots are far from decided.

Nevertheless, West Brom defender Townsend is confident that West Brom can achieve promotion back to the top-flight, beating Marcelo Bielsa's side to the title in the process.

"Hopefully it [the winning run] will keep going for the next five games," Townsend told the Baggies' club website. "There’s more to come. We are still pushing to try and kick on and pull away.

“We don’t just want to get promoted, we want to win the league.

“Leeds won so it was a task for us to win and keep in touch with them and that is what we have done.

“Hopefully we can kick on now and go and win all five games.”

The race for automatic promotion could take some further twists and turns this week before Leeds are next in action on Thursday, as Brentford play host to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday and West Brom welcome Derby County to the Hawthorns on Wednesday.
