West Bridgford residents angry as Victorian house demolished 'without permission'

West Bridgford residents have spoken of their anger after it was revealed a Victorian home there had been demolished.

Rushcliffe Borough Council said no permission was given to demolish the house in Bridgford Road, believed to have happened at some point earlier in the year.

The authority added it does not condone the actions of demolition and is considering what action can be taken.

Andy Roberts, 44, of West Bridgford, said: "It's not good to hear that there was no permission. The whole point is for there to be a consultation and a process before a decision is made.

"I'd like to see the council take strong action here to rectify it."

A planning application had been submitted for extensions and alterations to the historical property, but demolition permission had not been sought by the owner.

Tamara Hunt, 33, of West Bridgford, added: "It should be rebuilt if there was no permission. It needs to go back to how it was and the proper permission granted or rejected.

"We need to retain older architecture as much as we can."

Jamie Wright, 32, who works as a designer, added: "It should be replaced as it was. It is sad to see it gone if this was not agreed. It needs following up and action needs to be taken."

A Rushcliffe Borough Council spokesperson told Nottinghamshire Live: “Permission was not given as part of the planning application to completely demolish the house and no subsequent authorisation for this work was secured.

“We do not condone the action taken on the site. We’re considering what courses of action that can be taken in line with central government guidance.

“The owner of the property has indicated an application for a replacement building on the site may be submitted in due course.”
