West Bengal: Social media helps find missing youth

KOLKATA: Twenty-eight hours after an 18-year-old student had gone missing from his Rajarhat home, the police and his family members managed to track him down with the help of social media.

Realising that the youth was missing from home and that he had switched off his cellphone, his worried family started circulating a post on social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp with the youth’s photograph, description, clothes and phone numbers of the family members.

The post had gone viral on the social media platforms. A person recognised the youth from the post at Krishnanagar station 95km away, who then called up his parents and gave the youth’s whereabouts. Officers of Narayanpur police station and his parents reached there and brought him back home on Tuesday night.

The police said the youth has told his family that he had left home on his own following some personal issues. When TOI contacted his family members, they refused to discuss the incident as he was back home safe.
