Met department predicts heavy rain in coastal districts of West Bengal

KOLKATA: A low-pressure set to form over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on August 7 is likely to trigger rain in the coastal districts of Bengal, including Kolkata between August 9 and 11.

The city may receive heavy showers on August 10, while South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore are set to receive heavy showers on August 9 and 10, said the Met office.

This is the first big rain-triggering system that will hit south Bengal this season. Kolkata ended July with a rain deficit of 41%, the highest since 2019 when it recorded a massive 62% shortfall for June and July.

"The system will be a big one and will intensify after forming on August 7. It is likely to generate a wind at a speed exceeding 50 km, especially along the coastal areas. The latter will also receive heavy showers," said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.

He said Kolkata may receive light to moderate rain under the impact of the system from August 9 but the showers could gain intensity on August 10. "The rain will gradually lose intensity from August 11," Das added.

So far this monsoon, Kolkata has received sporadic moderate rain under the impact of thunderstorms and clouds floating in from Bangladesh.
