West Bengal: Dramatist attacked after protest in Khardah

KOLKATA: A 48-year-old dramatist, also the director of a theatre group, was seriously injured after being attacked with a razor by a group of drunken goons for protesting against anti-social activities in the area in Khardah on Saturday afternoon.

Tapan Das was admitted to a nursing home in Sodepur. Cops are looking for the culprits, but no one has been arrested yet.

According to sources, a group drinks, passes lewd comments and makes obscene gestures at women, and are involved in several crimes in Shantinagar area where Das lives. “But nobody protested as the group threatened people. But Das went to cops and got some of them arrested,” a local said.

On Saturday, Das was attacked by the goons on his way home. “One of them attacked me with a razor. I fought, but they slashed my face,” Das said.

On hearing Das scream, locals rushed to help him. But the goons managed to flee. Das lodged an FIR against some local criminals. “We have received a complaint and a raid is on to nab the culprits. Some accused have already been identified,” an officer said.
