West Belfast volunteers brave Storm Barra to help those less fortunate at Christmas

West Belfast volunteers braved the worst of Storm Barra on Tuesday to collect donations for families this Christmas.

Heavy rain and gale force winds didn't stop them from standing on the Andersonstown Road to engage with the public and fundraise for their cause.

They began the sit-out on Monday and will be at the same spot every day 8am to 4pm until Sunday December 12.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Paul Doherty from Foodstock said: "Myself and Sean Smyth from Eimear's Wish are out to try and get as many donations of food and toys as we can. We are trying to help as many families as possible this Christmas.

"People in the community have been absolutely fantastic in coming out and supporting us and donating throughout the day. We have got great community spirit and great Christmas spirit. People are really stepping up.

"No one in this community should go without food, without heat, without a Christmas for their children. Myself and Sean are doing our best this week to ensure that is the case."

Paul, who is also the SDLP's West Belfast representative, said people can donate money, toys, vouchers, selections boxes and food.

Foodstock is based at 150F Andersontown Road. They can be contacted through their social media pages and are open seven days a week.

Sean Smyth has been involved with Foodstock through his charity, Eimear's Wish.

Eimear Smyth, Sean's daughter, died on June 27 2019, aged 25, due to complications from a Donor Stem Cell Transplant. Her dying wish was for the world to know that she had beaten cancer, and for her family to raise Stem Cell Donor Awareness in Northern Ireland and campaign for age-appropriate care for teenagers and young adults who are diagnosed with life threatening illness.

"Paul Doherty has been a great supporter of ours," Sean said.

"I thought, well I am off on a weeks holiday, why not do the sit-out? It is OK to be poor, there is no shame. One thing about Foodstock that has really touched my heart, is not only do they deliver toys and food - they deliver hope.

"That is why I got involved and I'd encourage others to do the same. We want to make sure no child wakes up on Christmas morning without a toy, without heat or electricity in their house."
