West Belfast 'underground cable fire' investigated by Fire Service and NIE

Residents in West Belfast were this morning advised to avoid leaving their streets after reports of burning underground cables.

Northern Ireland Electricity and the Fire and Rescue Service were called to attendance in the Dermott Hill area.

One Appliance from Whitla Fire Station, two Appliances from Springfield Fire Station and the Specialist Rescue Team attended the incident.

A spokesperson for NIFRS told Belfast Live: "Firefighters were called to reports of an underground cable fire on Dermot Hill Road. NIE isolated power in the area and Firefighters carried out gas monitor readings on Dermot Hill Road and the adjoining area.

"All gas monitor readings were normal and the incident was dealt with by 9.24am."

Local Sinn Féin councillor Micheal Donnelly was at the scene early Thursday morning.

He said: "All streets are now accessible again and fire service have left. NIE are still in the area though."

A spokesperson for NIE said: "We are aware of an underground cable fault in this area and have been working since 07:47 this morning to resolve the issue.

"We aim to have all repairs completed by early this afternoon."
