West Belfast shooting incident a 'barbaric act' say PSNI

A man has sustained serious leg wounds in an apparent 'paramilitary style assault' in West Belfast.

Police say at around 8:10pm on December 3, a male in his 30s was shot in both legs in the Downfine Walk area.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.

Detective Sergeant Sam McCallum said: “Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, we are treating this shooting incident as a paramilitary style assault.

"Those responsible for this barbaric act do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it. They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent."

“An investigation is underway and I would urge anyone with any information to call detectives on 101 quoting reference number 1737 of 03/12/20," he added.

"Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Speaking to Belfast Live on Thursday night, SDLP representative Paul Doherty said those involved left the entire community feeling "disturbed" and digested".

He added: "The message is clear to these groups. They need to get off this community's back and go away.

"These sort of acts should never be dealt with in this manner, it's totally unacceptable and shows a total lack of respect for the local area."
