West Belfast school employee tests positive for Coronavirus

Part of a West Belfast school has been closed for cleaning after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19.

Coláiste Feirste principal Micheál Mac Giolla Ghunna said in a statement that the employee may have had "some casual contact" with year eight pupils.

But after speaking to the Public Health Agency, said they have been assured children can still attend the school.

Their full statement, written in both Irish and English, reads: "I wish to inform you that a member of our school community has tested positive for Covid-19. I have followed the most up-to-date advice from the Public Health Agency (PHA).

"We have ensured that the affected area in the school remains closed for a deep clean. We believe that there may have been some casual contact between the staff member and some Year 8 pupils.

"We have spoken to PHA doctors and they assure us that this does not constitute a risk and that the children can attend school."

However, if a child at school displays any symptoms of the virus they have asked that parents or guardians keep them at home.

They added: "Of course if your child displays any of the three Covid symptoms they should be kept at home and you should follow PHA advice.

"I appreciate the concerns of parents, pupils and the wider school community and wish to reassure you that every precaution has been taken. Ensuring the safe return of pupils and staff to school is our absolute priority and I will continue to monitor this situation carefully and keep you informed."
