West Belfast residents targeted by scammers

Police have urged the public to be vigilant after elderly residents in West Belfast were targeted by scammers.

People in Andersonstown Park were approached by two males in a white van who promised to carry out maintenance work to their homes.

The men were paid for the jobs, but they did not provide any services, leaving victims out of pocket.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "We wish to warn you of an apparent scam which has unfolded over the last week.

"Two males in a white van have called to local elderly residents homes in the Andersonstown Park area with the promise of carrying out maintenance work to the exterior of the home.

"However the males received payment for this work but did not provide a service.

"Please be mindful of any callers to your home who may be offering to carry out work and ensure you do not pay for any services prior to the work being completed.

"Scammers such as these males usually target the elderly members of our communities as they perhaps do not have access to social media to make them aware of such incidents.

"If you do happen to become aware of a scam such as this, please call 101 straight away and keep any calling cards or information you may have been provided with by the caller, in order that they can be passed to Police."
