West Belfast residents hold protest after child knocked down

Residents in West Belfast have held a protest after a child was knocked down.

The incident was blamed on poor parking that is making it difficult for drivers to see and manoeuvre the streets.

The issue centres around the 'Rock' streets off the Falls Road with Rockville Street of particular concern.

Four-year-old Cadhla Sheridan was knocked down by a driver who wasn't speeding but whose vision was impaired due to poor parking on the street.

She wasn't badly injured, however, her mum Nicole told Belfast Live that the issue is making the area unsafe for children to play.

She added: "My daughter Cadhla was knocked down in this street - he was not speeding - but with the amount of cars which don’t belong in the street it makes it difficult for drivers to see kids between cars and it's not safe for our kids to play."

A protest was held on Thursday evening, with residents calling for considerate parking and to urge drivers not to speed.

Resident Paula Whelan added: "The amount of traffic in this dead end street is uncalled for.

"Cars are also speeding up the street where children are playing. They are parking on the double yellow lines at the bottom of the street at both sides which is blocking residents getting in to the street and out.

"There are sensors at the traffic lights at bottom of street and with the cars parking, it's stopping the lights changing to green so cars then have to break the lights to get out."
