Murder investigation launched after shooting in West Belfast

Police have launched a murder investigation following a fatal shooting in West Belfast.

One man, believed to be in his late 50s, sustained gunshot wounds in his home in Lenadoon.

It is understood members of his family were in the house at the time in Lenadoon Avenue.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the attack despite the best efforts of paramedics to save his life.

Police last night mounted a full scale security operation around the scene and appealed for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious, or who may have dashcam footage, to contact them directly.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Shaw said: “We received a report at around 10pm that a man had been shot in a property in the Lenadoon Avenue area of the city.

“Officers attended, along with colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. Sadly, a man has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our enquiries are at any early stage.  However, I would appeal to anyone with information, or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around that time, to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1589 of 17/05/20.”

Information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is 100% anonymous.

MP for West Belfast Alex Maskey said: "I condemn those responsible for this attack and they must be brought before the courts.

"A police operation is ongoing in the Lenadoon area and I would appeal to anyone with information on this shooting to bring it forward to the PSNI.
