West Belfast lad cycling round Falls Park every day to raise money for NI Hospice

A West Belfast mum said her heart is bursting with pride at the kindness of her six-year-old son.

Little Rossa Doherty wanted to do something to help in the fight against coronavirus after seeing fundraisers like Colonel Tom and  Joe Wicks raising cash to help the NHS.

So the Bunscoil pupil decided to get on his bike to help NI Hospice buy much needed personal protective equipment and has so far raised over £1,200.

His proud mum, Caoimhe Scullion, told us: "He had been doing Joe Wicks every morning and Joe had been raising money and then there was the man walking round his garden raising money.

"He had been hearing things like that and he said to 'mummy, what could I do to help the doctors and nurses?'.

"I said 'if you want you could do something sponsored'."

Because they live just beside Falls Park, Caoimhe said they settled on a cycle round the park every day in May.

"I said 'you would have to do it even if it was lashing rain - it doesn't matter what the weather is you have to do it' and he said 'yes'," she added.

"He's getting fitter every day going up the hills.

"I am just so proud of him, I can't believe he decided to do it himself.

"My heart is just so proud, he's amazing, he really is so kind.

"He's going to give all the money he raises to the Northern Ireland Hospice," she continued.

Caoimhe said her boy chose them as they "had been watching the news and it said they had the least amount of PPE - that they were really last in the pecking order".

"It's a cause close to everyone's heart as well."

"It takes him about 20 minutes, half an hour. He goes the whole way round the whole park.
