West Belfast GAA club pays tribute to "gentleman" Gerry Higgins

A West Belfast GAA club has paid tribute to "gentleman" Gerry Higgins who passed away on Sunday.

St Gall's GAC said it was "with great sadness" that it had learned of Mr Higgins's death at the age of 68.

Gerry represented St Gall's as both a player and manager, and also captained managed Antrim.

He also played Irish League football with clubs including Glenavon, Larne and Lisburn Distillery.

"It is with great sadness that we have just learned of the death of our esteemed member Gerry Higgins," St Gall's said on their Facebook page.

"Gerry was an exceptional player, for both club and county, he coached teams at all levels and in his later years continued to serve Naomh Gall as our Development Officer and Vice Chairman.

"He was a club man, a family man, a gentleman to all, and a true ambassador for Naomh Gall.

"We offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Olivia, children Gareth, Lisa and Paul and their families; his sister Monica, our club chair, and to the entire Higgins and Culbert families at this most difficult time.

"You are all in our thoughts and prayers."

The tribute added: "The Higgins family would like to thank the residential unit staff of Brooklands Care Home, Mater Hospital Ward D and especially N.I Hospice who cared for him with compassion and dignity.

"Our Lady Queen of the Gael pray for him.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."

Gerry's son Paul Higgins started a fundraising campaign in aid of the Alzheimer's Society last week.

The charity effort has so far raised over £12,000.

Anyone wanting to donate to Paul's appeal can do so on his 'Jog on Dementia' page HERE.
