West Belfast football club to hold match in memory of former player

A West Belfast football club will return from lockdown this weekend with a charity match in memory of one of its former players.

Tullymore Swifts will take on Suffolk Swifts in a special fundraising game on Saturday at the Brook pitches (1pm kick-off).

The game will be in honour of Marc Prendergast who died suddenly back in February this year.

The 28-year-old electrician from Lagmore, who captained Tullymore's Over 35 team, passed away with an underlying heart condition.

The club hopes Saturday's game raises awareness for the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity (CRY).

"This is the first game since Marc last played for the club and we hope to do him justice," said Tullymore secretary James Murphy.

"Suffolks Swifts is another former club of Marc's and we are delighted they are coming along to support the day."

James said Marc's sudden death six months ago sent shockwaves around the community.

"Marc was such a popular member of the club and community," James said.

"Saturday will be the first game since he last played for the club, so I am sure it will be an emotional day.

"He was an absolute gentleman, and his death just shocked everyone. Marc was such a fit, young man. Nobody ever expected something like this to happen.

"So I think Saturday is also an important day to highlight charities such as Cardiac Risk in the Young, and the issue of underlying heart conditions which claim the lives of so many people."
