West Belfast football club pays perfect tribute to former player

A West Belfast football club paid the perfect tribute to one of its former players at the weekend by winning a trophy named in his honour.

St James' Swifts Under 18s lifted the Dennis Weldon Memorial Cup, previously known as the South Belfast Supplementary Cup.

The competition was renamed in honour of popular St James' player Dennis Weldon who passed away last November at the age of 16.

The South Belfast Youth League dedicated last Saturday's trophy to the teenager who was affectionately known as 'DJ'.

The league also produced team badges with Dennis' name on them for the players to wear.

St James' only discovered the trophy had been renamed the day before their final against St Mary's.

And Under 18 manager Joseph McCall said emotions were running high ahead of the game.

"It was a brilliant gesture by the league and everyone is so appreciative of what they did," he said.

"It was a very difficult day for the boys. This final was originally due to be played on the day DJ passed away.

"We had a lot of DJ's family down at the game on Saturday night supporting us. I think there were probably over 400 people there which was brilliant.

"My young players had never really experienced that before, and there was a lot riding on the game.

"So it was an emotional rollercoaster, and to win it was amazing."

The final - played at Crusaders' Seaview ground - was decided by a single goal scored by Daire McGrogan.

"St Mary's actually beat us 5-1 in the group stages of the cup, so to beat them in the final was a great achievement," Joseph added.

"They had agreed to postpone the final back in November after what happened to DJ, so we have to thank them for being so professional throughout."

Joseph added: "We are going to hand the cup over to DJ's family.

"We made a promise that we would win the cup for DJ and thankfully we were able to do it."
